Is video still relevant in 2022?
2022 is starting off the back of a pretty significant year in the majority of people's lives. We have managed to stay connected not only personally but within our businesses thanks to advances in technology, the Metaverse and platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Slack and Zoom, it is easier than ever to get the team together virtually, without actually being in the room.
Entering the year of the Tiger, full of courage and a competitive spirit — the question we are pondering is, video still relevant?
You may think this is a silly question but it is important to note that the growth and acceleration of technology has transformed how we interact with each other. Technology has grown exponentially! In fact, it has grown more in the last 25 years than it has in the last 200 years altogether.
One of the biggest problems we face in society is keeping up with technology trends, every day new emerging tech comes into play and if you look away for a second you can find yourself last to the table, not only in our personal lives but in our businesses too.
Applications such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn are not only leading the way with how we interact with each other digitally, they are constantly making changes, adding features and updating the platforms so more can be done effortlessly, without much thought — on the click of a few buttons. Live video streaming straight from platforms and quick edit features are added every moment, making creating video content easier than ever.
The use of AI, voice/face recognition and smart pay is also streamlining a lot of the ways we operate in society. You would be blind to think that we have not become integrated digitally, despite what some critics think.
So with that said let’s look at video. Video has been used since 1888 to capture stories, provide entertainment, educate and report news, to name a few. Fast forward to today and it has become an integral part of nearly every facet of our lives, with most of us choosing to Facetime our friends, family, colleagues over a standard voice call, without a second thought.
In 2020 the total number of people watching digital videos in the US reached 244.4 million! Far exceeding what experts had originally predicted, YouTube figures suggested 2021 had 2+ billion active monthly users and around 122 million per day. These unbelievable statistics alone suggest the impact that video has on our everyday lives.
We are all guilty of falling into a rabbit hole of binge-watching video after video and then stopping to realise that we have spent hours, not minutes consuming content — many platforms have even created stand-alone sections just to house short clips, stories, reels and shorts. Check your smartphone application screen times and we promise you will receive a shock, every time.
Video has been cemented into our lives, more than we realise and with the growth of tech and how history has been proven, it will also only continue to snowball, hopefully with importance and relevance to our ever-changing needs and requirements.
We think it’s safe to say video is not a trend or phase, it is an integral part of our lives that gives us endless entertainment, purpose, communication, value, laughs and so much more. Video is here to stay, and we welcome the acceleration into a more digitally comfortable world.
